ACCESS

Erika is using her skills and knowledge of the disability and blindness sector in paid job roles, contract positions and on Boards.

Erika is a participant in the Leader for Tomorrow program. The Leaders for Tomorrow program is an individual leadership program which is committed to developing 200 people to be more skilled, confident and active in leadership roles in business, community, government or their chosen area of interest.

Erika’s goals as a participant are:
Obtain qualifications in:
– Access consulting Cert IV
– Road Safety Auditor

Seek paid employment using skills and knowledge, preferably in area of Advocacy.

Increase Board memberships

Develop Leadership skills.

The Leaders for Tomorrow program is being delivered throughout Australia by Hunter TAFE’s NSW Consumer Support and Training Project together with E-QUAL (Enhancing Quality) Western Australia.

Erika has completed in July 2013 a Road Safety Auditing Course as a team member by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) and Main Roads WA. Erika is hoping to do more Road Safety Audits, to use her newly gained skills.

Erika commenced in January 2014 and is due to complete in February 2015 the Certificate IV in Access Consulting – CPP40811

The course includes twenty Units of Competency required for qualification as an Access Consultant. It will be of enormous benefit to people and organisations with responsibility to improve access to buildings, facilities, parks, streetscapes, playgrounds and open spaces.

This includes government staff, building certifiers, architects, building designers, asset managers, occupational therapists, educational institutions, hospitals and other organisations.

Erika has been working tirelessly as a volunteer on various issues for people who are blind or vision impaired or deafblind and the disability sector.

Erika has been recognised for her role as a community representative and is often called upon to provide advice to various local. state and federal government departments.

Erika has a great number of skills, knowledge and has been doing systemic advocacy in areas of

^ access to the built environment,
^ accessible public transport,
^ pedestrian and cyclist issues relating to people with disabilities and
^ access to accessible alternative information for people with print disabilities.

Erika is and has been an active member of the following committees that deal with:
Access to the built environment;
Access to accessible venues;
Accessible infrastructure;
Access for pedestrians and cyclists with disabilities;
Access to public tranpsort;
Access to accessible information;
Access to community by people with disabilities, by people who are blind and vision impaired and by people who are DeafBlind and by people who are Dog Guide handlers.
